July 3, 2017

You can be physically fit, have low cholesterol levels, an impressive physique, and a daily workout routine. However, that still does not mean you are mentally healthy, which is as important as physical fitness or perhaps even more significant.

A human body requires different types of nutrients to thrive and grow. What we eat does not only affect our bodies, in fact, the nutrients absorbed through what we eat also impact our mood, focus, memory, clarity, and overall mental health.

Different foods contain different nutrients which help our body, mind, and heart in different ways. Foods that have sugars and saturated oils and are processed are harmful to the body as well as the brain. They just make us momentarily happy by releasing happy hormones known as dopamine but in the long run, they only make us lethargic, increase weight and cause brain fog.

A research carried out on rats in the University of New South Wales in 2014 revealed that the rats which were fed unhealthy food became slow and sluggish and averse to healthy food options. On the other hand, another study revealed that when individuals are exposed to nutrient rich foods, their mental focus increases and becomes equivalent to people five years their juniors.

It is proved that healthy, nutritious and unprocessed foods can help elevate our moods, focus and mental sharpness to a great extent. A variety of food items can be consumed on a regular basis to enhance mental sharpness and focus. But there are some superfoods that can influence the brain’s activity the most such as;

  1. Water

Yes, you read that right. Water is the number 1 source of energy that ensures overall well-being. Furthermore, over 60 per cent of an adult human body is made of water, thus, there is no reason why it should not top the list of brain boosting foods.

Water gives the brain the required dose of electrical energy that is essential for it to function well. What’s more, drinking enough water also improves focus and helps us think faster. Water is also integral for the production of hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain.

Hence, it’s important that we pay attention to being hydrated and drink at least 2 liters of water per day. When we are functioning on a full reserve of water, our brains will focus better and will consequently be more attentive and creative.

  1. Avocado

It’s about time the world accepted and realized the many health benefits of avocado. After all, avocados are whole foods that provide innumerable health benefits to our body, mind, and heart.

Previously avocados were considered to have excessive fat. But scientists and nutritionists have recently discovered that it contains ‘good’ fats which are integral with our body and mind.

Our body comprises 60% fat, hence, it is natural to keep replenishing our bodies with the right type of fats, and avocados do just that. An avocado is filled with monounsaturated fats that are helpful in reducing ‘bad’ cholesterol from the body which is responsible for clogged arteries that consequently lead to heart and brain-related diseases.

This is basically why consumption of avocados reduces the risk of stroke in people. Additionally, avocados are also a great source of folic acid, a deficiency of which is said to cause increased cognitive impairments in Alzheimer’s patients.

Moreover, avocados provide the brain with ketosis that helps in protecting it from diseases and keeps it sharp and healthy. Avocados also contain Vitamin K in abundance which is directly linked with improving memory.

Thus, it is a no wonder that avocados are the healthiest fruit in the market!

  1. Fatty fish

Fatty fish such as salmon and sardines are power foods that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, protein, zinc, minerals, EPA and DHA.

Research reveals that fatty fish help boosts blood flow to the brain and facilitate the formation of new brain cells. Hence, the consumption of fatty fish is linked to many health benefits such as reduced chances of dementia and improved focus and mental agility. Moreover, eating fatty fish is also beneficial for an unborn baby’s brain development as well as for young children.

  1. Green vegetables

Green and cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale, etc., have now been proven as an affordable method for protection against dementia and other mental impairments.

Studies have revealed that those who consume more leafy greens experience a slower decline of cognition and memory. Furthermore, Vitamin K, lutein, folate as well as beta-carotene are also found in leafy green vegetables, and aid slow cognitive decline.

People who eat leafy greens are also generally happier and more energetic. Hence, there is no doubting the fact that green vegetables are an ideal food option to consume if you want a sharper brain.

  1. Berries

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and acai berries are all healthy fruits to eat for the improvement of the immune system. Additionally, these nutritious fruits also play a vital role in improving brain health since they are full of antioxidants known as phytochemicals.

According to the American Chemical Society Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, evidence shows that berries clean up the toxic proteins which cause memory decline. Also, they have been linked to enhanced cognition and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Inflammation has shown to cause cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, if consumed regularly, berries can definitely lead to improved mental health. The best part about eating berries is that besides being low in fat, they are delicious and a hassle free fruit to eat!

It is a myth that mental decline is linked to age. By eating smart and healthy, we can give our bodies as well as our brains the nutrients they require to stay healthy and sharp.
